Text Box: The Maiden Rock Float
By Evy Johnson

Text Box: Text Box: Two Prescott women are researching log buildings, present and past, that you may have mentioned in accounts of your early family members who lived in the Maiden Rock area.  We are searching for mention of cabins, schools or churches in the area.

By consulting the 1877-78 Atlas of Pierce County, we see at least five early schools, were any of them log?  In the 1898 Atlas, all log homes are indicated by a circle, and there are numerous such homes in the township, were any of them in your family, or are any still standing?
So far, we have drawn a blank when it comes to anything written about Maiden Rock.

If you can help with this historical project, please contact us, thank you.

I am writing a historical novel set in a small fictitious Wisconsin town, on the Mississippi River, in 1928. I am looking for persons who might have lived or have heard stories concerning life in the late 1920’s or 1930’s. I am interested in information on the subjects of:

· Types of housing, indoor/outdoor plumbing, source of heating and source of lighting
· Clothing worn
· Remembrances of winter sports
· Summer past-times like swimming, baseball, etc
· Children’s games
· Train travel, travel by car, travel by horse
· Stores, theaters, schools, restaurants
· Logging on the river
· Travel on the Mississippi
· Or subjects of any kind that would lend greater authenticity to my novel

I will be in your area this summer, and would like to set up interviews in advance with whoever may have stories or remembrances of this time. Does this seem like something your society might be able to help me with? If so please contact me at:

Text Box: Arnie Johnson with the Third Place Trophy.

In the 1870’s, river boats were built on the shores of Lake Pepin at Maiden Rock.  Dennis Grebner had a picture of the ferry boat “Pepin”, built in 1871.  The boat ferried people between the river villages in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Dennis did a scale drawing of the “Pepin”.  Arnie Johnson built the replica of the ferry boat.  The original boat was about 72 feet long and 27 feet high and 22 feet wide.  The replica is about 12 feet long, 7 feet high and 4 feet wide.

Thanks Dennis and Arnie.

Arnie has the float in the Maiden Rock Summerfest Parade and takes it as a good neighbor to the parades in the villages of Bay City, Arkansaw, Pepin and Wabasha.

Thanks to the Maiden Rock Area Community Association, Hiawatha Bank, Park Service and Ole’s Bar who help to sponsor the “Pepin” float.  Peggy Rother also takes the float to parades.

This year the “Pepin” received a third place trophy in the Novelty Division at the Arkansaw Creek Days Parade.
